Weekly Assiganment on The Sorrows of Young Werther 01

1.      Werther says “ That the life of man is but a dream is a thought which has occurred to many people, and I myself am constantly haunted by it” at the beginning of the letter written on May 22. What is he trying to tell us, we people everywhere? If Werther also see the life of man as a dream, does his dream of life have any difference from others’? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.] I think Werther was trying to tell that he was discovering the meaning of life, and the thought of “life of man is but a dream” was kept thought by him. He also told William that he didn’t like the thing which had a bright outside but an ugly inside because they were like dreams which was not true. So Werther make himself alone and try to know the real meaning of life. I think Werther dreamed of something different from others because he saw things deeper, he realized that he wanted to be more optimistic and he mentioned that if someone could do a hard job with a hardworking heart and not afraid of obstacle and go straight or people who could make his small garden into a paradise, he would be happy, so I think Werther had a very different thought from other people. 2.     How does Werther think of children? Why does he think that the happiest people in the world are like children? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.] Werther mentioned that he thought children were the happiest because they live only today which I think that means that those children have no worry about tomorrow, and Werther said that the children asked for more sweets but they already got a lot was really well-being. He also told that the happiest people were just like the children, children played dolls, carry their dolls around their mom and surrounded by the happy atmosphere. I think another reason for Werther to regard those happy as the kids was because he like the naïve side of them and he wanted to be like that.3.     What kind of person does Werther think he is? What are the characteristics of the youngWerther you learn from the letter on May 22?

I think Werther thought himself as a man who saw the true world and I think he was a person who was sentimental and like to discuss the meaning of life.

    Hey, Ann,

    Essay One
Good viewpoints you shared in your Essay One. You think Werther is very different from others by bearing so many gloomy, romantic, ideal and sometimes cynical thoughts but still having optimistic hopes, don’t you? This is a very special observation. It makes sense too.

He is actually urging people to “live” their lives but not just “survive” by saying “such a man remains calm and shapes his own world our of himself; and he is happy because he is a human.” Bur, very ironically, he still gives in to the real world. Many things in our lives are really easier said than done. Do you agree?

    Essay Two
    Good viewpoints again!
Werther really likes to stay being a child. He…avoids growing up, actually. A pain everybody has to face and tries to strike a perfect balance between his or her own dreams and the real world.

    Essay Three
Why do you say Werther is sentimental? Try to give evidence to prove it.
What things he’d done make us know that he is sentimental? Try to find them out. Do not just give a quick conclusion(ex. he is humorous) without explaining why(..because he’s done something in a certain event).

You earn an A- for your hard work.
